AI-First Workforce Planning Capability at a Fortune 100 Biopharma

Strategic advisor · Fortune 100 Biopharmaceutical Company (~50,000 employees)

Sourced the Orgvue platform and structured the year-long advisory engagement to build the enterprise Strategic Workforce Planning function the CHRO's multi-year transformation required.

Situation

A Fortune 100 biopharmaceutical company with approximately 50,000 employees globally was executing a C-suite mandate to operate as an AI-first workforce focused on bringing drugs to market faster. The investment thesis spanned R&D, legal and regulatory affairs, go-to-market, and the full set of enterprise enabling functions. The CHRO was on a multi-year journey to reposition HR from an enabling function to a strategic enterprise capability, and the platform needed to underpin both mandates. The blocker: no analytical instrument existed to identify AI investment opportunities at the work-activity level, design future-state roles around AI-augmented operating models, or measure ROI on AI and automation spend without breaking the workforce.

Task

Tim led a year-long advisory engagement covering visioning, business case definition and validation, organizational decomposition, technology fit assessment, and the sourcing strategy for the analytical platform that would underpin the new enterprise Strategic Workforce Planning function.

Action

Tim delivered a validated business case and a sourced platform across a full year-long strategy and technology sourcing engagement, against the typical 18- to 24-month internal scoping cycles for capability builds at this scope and stakeholder complexity, by structuring the engagement around the CHRO’s strategic mandate and tying it directly to the C-suite AI-first vision across R&D, legal, GTM, and enabling functions. The work applied Orgvue’s Data-Driven Organization Design approach, Organization-as-a-System conceptual data model, Org Planning and Analysis framework, and Henshaw AI capability for role clustering and human-in-the-loop org analytics.

Result

A net-new enterprise Strategic Workforce Planning function structured on the Orgvue platform, sized to analyze AI investment opportunities across R&D, legal, GTM, and enabling functions and to design the operating model that captures ROI without breaking the workforce. The engagement is the analytical spine of the CHRO’s multi-year HR-as-strategic-function transformation.
